The Battle for Musical Listening Supremacy

Surely this needs no introduction at this point.

My brother Chris and I are heavy users of my music page to the point that we have "fight" over what songs show up in the trending list. Now, this is a bit difficult because our listening habits are quite different and we have a lot of overlap in music tastes.

Now, if you clicked that link up there (or recall from when that post when up), I log each and every song that is played. This is a never ending source of fun for me as I constantly find new ways of interpreting the data, the Dx Top 10, for instance.

That said, it has been some time since I've crunched these numbers into some nice graphs, so I thought it would be fun to display our battle for dominance as such. The following data was culled from February to April of this year (where I began accurately tracking who played what). For additional details, hover over a row.

As you can see, I listen to a much more diverse selection of music than my brother. Having lived with him, I know that when he gets stuck on a song, he will listen to it many times over, back to back. What I generally do is queue up whatever serves my fancy and then let it play through the entire library randomly for the rest of the day. Keep this in mind as you pore over the following graphs.

I would like to make a special note here about Chris' plays of Another Heaven and A.R. were added to the page on 4/17 and 4/21 respectively. So, his high play count for those two songs were crammed into a very short period of time.

Now this is what I find most fascinating: numbers reflecting our lives. I have a desk job with a constant connection to the internet, so most of my playing happens at work during normal business hours. Chris works a super early shift at Wal-Mart, so his sond playing doesn't really begin until he gets home in the afternoon. However, he's pretty solid whereas I taper off throughout the day... that is until after my nap in the evening when I begin programming.

So, that was fun. I'll probably do this again in another few months as I've added additional statistics into the logs, namely when a song is played through its entirety and when it's skipped. Until next time.
